Amazon’s e-reader features simple-to-change settings to improve the reading experience.
Kindle has a variety of features that help the user to read better at night. In addition to the screen lighting – a differentiator of the Amazon product when comparing it to traditional books – there are also other technologies that allow reading to remain pleasant in low light environments. Adjusting the brightness, increasing the font and using the dark mode, for example, are some of the functions that optimize the use of the e-reader. Check out the list of eight resources to make ebooks easier to read.
It is worth remembering that the Amazon e-reader is available in three models: traditional Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Oasis.
1. Automatic brightness
Auto Brightness allows the Kindle’s Adaptive Front Light to change brightness based on ambient light. Available on Kindle Paperwhite and KIndle Oasis (2019) models , simply select the “Auto Brightness” option from the “Quick Settings” menu to enable the feature.
Another option would be to manually adapt the brightness to your interest. In this case, the user must swipe down from the top of the screen to reveal the “Quick Settings” menu. Then use the slider under “Brightness” to set the brightness to suit your environment.
Depending on which Kindle version, there is a certain amount of LED lights behind the front display. In the base model, for example, there are four LEDs. While in the Kindle Oasis version, the user will find 25 LEDs with a density of 300 ppi.
2. Night Light
Another feature available for the e-reader is the Night Light option for reading in the dark. This function is relevant because the light gradually dims the screen over time as your eyes adjust to the darkness, so you’re always comfortable and don’t strain your eyes.
Access this feature is quite simple: first the user to go to the main settings page. Then tap on “All Settings”, followed by “Device Options”, “Display Settings” and finally “Night Light”. Ready! Then the feature will already be active.
3. Warm light
Only available on newer models such as the 2021 Kindle Paperwhite 11th Gen or the Kindle Oasis 3 released in 2019, Warm Light changes the heat of light emitted by the screen. To activate the feature, the user must swipe from top to bottom to access the “Quick Settings” menu. After that, just use the slider on “Heat” to make the adjustments.
4. Dark Mode
Reading for long periods, especially in low-light environments, makes the reader find that switching to dark mode is more comforting for their eyes. This feature offers lighter text on a darker background, as many smartphones and tablets do today.
Dark Mode is a feature only available on Kindle Paperwhite 10th Generation (2018) or newer, as well as Oasis 2 and 3 models. The process for turning it on is simple. All you need to do is swipe down from the top of the screen to access the “Quick Settings” menu and tap on the “Dark Mode” button that is near the top right corner of the screen.
5. Adjusting Kindle Screen Size
Another way to improve the reading experience is to increase the screen font size and personalize your Kindle. The process is simple: enter “All Settings”, then “Device Options”, followed by “Display Settings” and “Screen Size”. There it is possible to change from the standard format to the large one, which tends to be more comfortable for the eyes.
There is also the option to change the screen size to enlarge the text and images in the main areas of your Kindle. Menu screens and images are more prominent and easier to navigate if you’re reading at night.
At night, when sleep hits, the user can continue reading in audio form. Some platforms even offer works from different categories, such as romance, fiction and fairy tales, for free download .
In addition, books in audio format can be consumed anywhere and even while the user performs other night tasks, such as taking a shower or preparing dinner. The feature also facilitates accessibility for people with visual impairments.
7. Water resistance
Often, reading at dusk takes place in environments where the user has contact with water. To this end, Amazon offers IPX8 resistance certification on Paperwhite and Oasis models. According to the manufacturer, the protection guarantees resistance to accidental immersion in up to 2 meters of fresh water for up to 60 minutes and 0.25 meters for up to 3 minutes in sea water.
8. Sleep mode
Kindle is intuitively designed not to shut down. Either the Amazon e-reader is on all the time, or it is in Sleep Mode. Thus, the user is always able to, as soon as he picks up the device, start reading his favorite book, without having to worry about turning on the device in low-light environments.
This feature is also important because it consumes less device battery. The device automatically enters sleep mode after a few minutes of inactivity and a screensaver will appear. If the reader prefers to activate this feature after finishing using the e-reader, just tap the power button.
